You're either intrigued or threatened by him and there is no way around it! good job, Weeks.
I love Solas! I can't think of any fictional Boo that got to me the way Solas did. I am shook! I am shooketh!
Before anything, I'd like to address this whole "Solas is racist" thing I often see floating around the internet: Solas is not racist he's prejudiced, the difference here is simple: he woke up in a world where elves are very much a oppressed minority and (especially in his weakened state) the only difference between him and the average elven mage is that he is aware of who really is and what he's really capable of, an awareness that translates into his personality and the way he carries himself. A pride that he wears as his name. a pride that is his superpower and his downfall.
Racism is a power structure whereas prejudice is ignorance.
Solas for me is a very relatable charachter just as the world of Thedas a very relatable world on so many levels, that's the beauty that Bioware created: players from different identities can relate this game and it's different characters in so many differnt ways based on their own individual reality and life experience. me for example being a queer Iraqi woman and a refugee and a history enthusiast, I feel my inner Solas rise (wait what? *chuckles*) every time I have my head in a history book and my brain goes "this is what was lost". The struggle with racism and prejudice, patriarchal structures, being displaced and othered, being feared for who you are and on the other hand reading the controversial and glorious histories of the ancient impires of my ancestors fills me both with grief and in a way also with hope. Solas would think the we are now a shell of what we used to be which in a way is kinda accurate as a modern civilization but as people I am filled with awe at the courgae, spirit and excellence that my home people still are. Solas for me is the spirit of the eternal questions: if you could change things, would you? and what price are you willing to pay for change and is it worth it?
Also, he's hot.
I love your blog, please keep writing! I don't mind people not liking him, though I wish they would try to at least understand him. You've pointed out many things I love about him and other I never even thought of. I'll have to point people to this next time this happens. So glad I stumbled upon this lovely piece.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07872051699554022929noreply@blogger.com
